2) “Growing the Grassroots:” Bay Area Convening is a Resounding Success!
On June 16, 2007, National CAPACD held our first Bay
Area Convening, “Growing the Grassroots: Fostering Partnerships
and Leadership Within API Immigrant Communities” in partnership
with fifteen community and national organizations. The
event brought together more than 250 local members, residents, clients,
patients and staff to share experiences, highlight advocacy efforts and
begin building a united advocacy agenda!
Initiated by CAPACD member organizations Asian Law Caucus and Chinatown
CDC, the event focused on including diverse AAPI populations, ensuring
language access, and expanding outreach to AAPI communities from Fresno
to Sacramento. The day also included tours of San Francisco
Chinatown and closed with a reception at the Manilatown Center at the
International Hotel honoring Congressman Mike Honda and Filipino
Veterans.
The conference featured breakout sessions and workshops addressing
affordable housing, community planning, immigration and health care,
and local AAPI elected leaders spoke on the role of the grassroots in
public policy. Panels were translated simultaneously into
Cantonese, Korean and Vietnamese, and event materials were also
available in these languages.
We plan to use this event as a model for planning multi-lingual,
multi-ethnic, and multi-issue convenings! If you would like to
host a forum with National CAPACD in your community, please contact us
at info@nationalcapacd.org.

3) U.S. House Passes Bill to Support AAPI Students and Boost College Financial Aid
The
U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 2669, the College Cost
Reduction Act of 2007, expanding higher education opportunities for
low-income Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) students.
H.R.
2669 provides grants to certain institutions of higher education,
designated as Asian American and Pacific Islander Serving Institutions,
to improve and expand services for low-income AAPI students.
Institutions that serve large numbers of low-income AAPI students have
not previously had access to this financial aid in part because
societal assumptions categorize the complex AAPI youth population of
over three million as a homogenous, academically successful unit that
is not in need of academic support systems.
Overall,
the College Cost Reduction Act boosts college financial aid by $18.25
billion over the next five years. The legislation pays for itself by
reducing excessive federal subsidies paid to private lenders in the
college loan industry by $19 billion. It also includes nearly $1
billion in federal budget deficit reduction.
The Senate is expected to vote on similar legislation this month.
