1) Asian American Community Organizations Awarded Funding Through National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling Program

In March 2007, NeighborWorks America announced that 700 local counseling agencies will receive $130 million to help families and individuals facing the threat of foreclosure, including five National CAPACD members.  National CAPACD awarded members include:
  • Asian Community Development Corporation – Boston, MA
  • Chhaya Community Development Corporation – Jackson Heights, NY
  • Chinese American Service League – Chicago, IL
  • Korean Churches for Community Development – Los Angeles, CA
  • Lao Family Community Development – Oakland, CA
Nationally, an estimated 350,000 to 400,000 families facing the threat of foreclosure will be directly assisted with this funding – and many more will be helped by the training of foreclosure counselors, provided through the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling program.

The foreclosure crisis is currently impacting millions of families across the nation.  Many AAPI families have been given high-cost loans and are at greater risk for foreclosure.   Unfortunately, few resources are being made available to target the specific needs of our communities.  Overall, the national response to foreclosure mitigation has not ensured that bilingual, bicultural information is disseminated about the home-buying process to AAPI and immigrant communities.

Over the past three months, National CAPACD has met with NeighborWorks America, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and many of the top mortgage lenders to advocate for AAPIs to receive adequate information and resources to mitigate the impact of foreclosures in our communities.  We will continue to work closely with our national partners to ensure that the needs of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islander communities are addressed.

NeighborWorks awarded National CAPACD 50 scholarships for NeighborWorks Training Institutes and Regional Placed Based Trainings on Foreclosures with the first training in St. Louis on May 19-23rd.  Additional dates and locations can be found on the NeighborWorks' website.  To apply for a scholarship please contact Nira Ly.  National CAPACD is also reaching out to our members to learn how the foreclosure crisis is impacting your communities.  If your member organization is interested in working with National CAPACD as we continue to partner with national financial institutions and government agencies to address foreclosure mitigation, please contact Nira Ly.
2)  National CAPACD Organizes First Ever Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander and Asian American Delegation to PolicyLink Summit

National CAPACD, in partnership with the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA) and the Southeast Asian Resource Action Center (SEARAC), brought together a delegation of Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, and Asian Americans to participate in the PolicyLink Regional Equity Summit.  During the Summit, held in New Orleans, March 5-7, more than 35 members of National CAPACD's, CNHA's and SEARAC's networks came together to share expertise and learn about equitable development.  The Summit offered participants a venue for community organizers, funders, researchers, and policy advocates to explore groundbreaking achievements, innovative strategies, and lasting policies that connect low-income/low-wealth communities to resources.

The joint delegation from National CAPACD, CNHA and SEARAC ensured that the Summit was inclusive of all communities, and provided a unique perspective from Native Hawaiians, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.  Several members of the delegation spoke on workshop panels, including Alex Zhang form Asian Community Development Corporation, Robin Danner from the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, Deyanira Del Rio from the Neighborhood Economic Development Advocacy Project and CAPACD Executive Director Lisa Hasegawa.  We look forward to seeing many of our delegation members soon at National CAPACD's 9th Annual Convention!
3)  National CAPACD Bids Farewell to TC Duong, Community Resources Programs Manager

National CAPACD is sadly saying goodbye to TC Duong, our Community Resources Programs Manager, who will be leaving the organization at the end of March.  For the last two years, TC has played an integral role in developing and leading National CAPACD's peer-to-peer technical assistance program: AAPI Communities Taking Initiative in Our Neighborhoods (ACTION).

Through TC’s committed efforts, ACTION has grown and flourished as a national network supporting the work of AAPI community-based organizations in cities across the country and impacting more than 11,000 people.  TC may be leaving National CAPACD, but he will continue to work with AAPI community-based organizations as the Program Manager for Asian Pacific Partners for Empowerment, Advocacy and Leadership (APPEAL), based in Oakland, CA.  TC will oversee APPEAL's training and technical assistance activities to build a tobacco-free AAPI community.

We wish TC all the best in his new life in California, but we’re not giving him up too easily.  He will continue to work with us through the transition period and remain part of the CAPACD family – and he will still be joining us at our Annual Convention this year in Anaheim!  Send TC your best wishes in his new endeavors at the Convention or at tcduong@nationalcapacd.org!

4) Highlights for National CAPACD's 9th Annual Convention!

Join National CAPACD for our 9th Annual Convention -- Vision, Voices, Votes: Standing Together for Justice & Equity – in Anaheim, CA, May 15-17, 2008!

This year, we are particularly excited to welcome Doris Koo, President/CEO of Enterprise Community Partners, who will speak on the current efforts to address the national foreclosure crisis.  Doris recently testified in front of the United States Senate Committee on Housing, Banking, and Urban Affairs regarding the national foreclosure crisis and the Senate’s Stimulus Package.  A former board member of National CAPACD, Doris is a nationally respected leader with nearly 30 years of housing and community development experience.

During this critical election year, we will be holding the convention in conjunction with APIAVote’s first-ever Presidential Town Hall,
