Call For Presentations

National CAPACD's annual convention provides an exciting opportunity and platform for hundreds of community organizers, housing and economic development organizations and social service providers that work with Asian, Pacific Islander, Native Hawaiian and other minority and immigrant communities to gather and share ideas for comprehensive solutions to community empowerment, development and planning.

The convention goals are: 1) Provide opportunities for networking 2) Develop the capacity of those who serve AAPI communities, 3) Encourage the active participation of the AAPI community in advocacy initiatives, 4) Develop collaborations among diverse people working to improve the lives of AAPIs and other communities of color.

We welcome presentations from service providers, educators, researchers, policy makers, youth, business representatives, government officials, media representatives, technical assistance providers and others. Conference organizers encourage workshops that explore actions and projects at different levels (from local, statewide, regional to national), and workshops that are innovative in format.

National CAPACD's annual convention is one of the largest gatherings of community based practitioners, organizers and advocacy agencies nationwide. It also brings together policy makers, legislative representatives, corporations and foundations working with AAPI communities. The convention offers a variety of trainings, forums to provide input to policies, opportunities for collaborations, mutual support and assistance.

Our national convention provides an opportunity to:

  • Exchange information, resources and experiences between community organizations in working with a growing and diverse AAPI population.
  • Build new and strengthen existing partnerships between elected officials, educational and research institutions, national intermediaries, government agencies, and other community based organizations.
  • Further develop your skills and organizational capacity in community development workshops led by established neighborhood practitioners, foundations, community organizers, researchers and technical assistance providers.

Special Features of the convention include:

  • Community Tours of Seattle neighborhoods led by community organizers and leaders
  • AAPI Heritage Reception that features local artists & entertainment

9:00 am      Opening Ceremony: The Cultural Heritage, the Community Activism, and History of Washington State

 

The opening ceremonies of the Convention will welcome attendees to share in the rich cultural heritage, community activism, and history of Washington State's diverse API communities as well as Seattle's landmark International District.  The Asian Pacific Islander Coalition is unique in the nation and has made tremendous contributions to the betterment of our communities throughout the state.  The International District is an urban, richly ethnic neighborhood which is the home base and the roots of Seattle's Asian American Community.  The opening ceremonies will feature a variety of presentations - live cultural performances, multi-media slide shows, and a video. Walking tour of the International District led by 'Mayor' of the International District, Bob Santos.

Get classroom training on how projects are packaged and then join the Community Tours to see Seattle based projects. Envision your neighborhood with a community center or housing project. Learn how to finance it and then see how it looks when it is finished!

This workshop will feature leading development experts that have worked in the AAPI communities. Sessions include training on how to built elderly services, affordable housing, community centers, and other facilities.

Choose from four different sites in Seattle and learn about various housing projects, elderly facilities, landmarks and business centers that promote the rich culture and diversity of AAPIs in Seattle.  These tours will correspond to the subject areas that were discussed in training prior to the tours. 9:30 am         Plenary Session: ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­Overview of the Federal Budget and Developing Community Actions

The federal budget for 2006 includes deep cuts in health and human services, housing, community development, and education programs.  The current federal budget omits the full cost of war efforts, and the privatization of social security, all of which will result in increasing deficits. Learn more about the federal budget, its implications and how community organizations can contend with issues that arise from the proposed plan.

10:30 am      Building our Futures: Reflecting Together on Progress, Challenges and Needs of AAPI Community Based Organizations: This session provides an opportunity for all convention participants to reflect upon their organizational assets and challenges with other members. The outcome will be a shared sense of progress and needs for AAPI community based organizations. In the first segment of the session, all participants will fill out a brief "Progress - Challenges - Needs" survey. Results will be available to participants following the conference. In the second segment of the session, participants will participate in small group breakouts that will engage issues related to programs, organizational growth; resource development, research and policy. The feedback from these sessions will provide in National CAPACD future programming.

8:30 am        Open Space Issue & Strategy Sessions

"Open Space Technology" will be used throughout the convention and participants will be design sessions to meet their own needs. Open Space Technology is often used when 1) there are great differences of opinions, 2) the issues are complex, 3) there is huge diversity of players and 4) when there is urgency. This structured time will allow for groups with a common passion or individuals with burning questions that they invite others to explore. Groups may: have deeper discussion of policy issues, organize against budget cuts, plan for reconnecting regionally post-convention, prepare for the Town Hall Meeting.
