Civil Rights Organizations Hail Creation of Financial Crimes Task Force & Steps to Stop Foreclosures
Washington, D.C. - Earlier today, the Obama Administration fulfilled a promise made during the State of the Union address, announcing the creation of a new financial crimes task force to investigate those responsible for misconduct contributing to the financial crisis. National CAPACD Applauds Cordray Appointment to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau
Washington, D.C. - Earlier today, President Obama appointed Richard Cordray as Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). We applaud the President for taking this bold step in appointing Richard Cordray to direct the CFPB. Established in 2010, the CFPB plays a critical role in protecting consumers from predatory and abusive practices in the financial marketplace. The recess appointment ensures that the CFPB is able to use its full authority to oversee and regulate non-bank mortgage lenders, credit scoring agencies, debt collectors, payday lenders, and student lenders. more»May 8, 2011
Southeast Asian Americans in the Central Valley are Among Hardest Hit by Foreclosure Crisis
SEARAC and National CAPACD released a report today, "Untold Stories of The Foreclosure Crisis: Southeast Asian Americans in the Central Valley" that for the first time, looks specifically at how the foreclosure crisis has impacted Southeast Asian Americans in the Central Valley of California. The report finds that while Southeast Asian Americans represent between 2-5% of the overall population of each Central Valley county, they tend to be concentrated in low and moderate-income zip codes with the highest rates of foreclosure. more»March 17, 2011
Asian American & Pacific Islander Community Leaders Speak Out Against Federal Budget Cuts
On March 17th organizations representing and serving Asian American and Pacific Islander communities across the country joined together to express their alarm in response to proposed cuts to federal support for essential services for seniors, children, and the poor. This week Congressional leaders agreed to extend funding for federal programs but only until April 8. Washington DC - Last week the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) approved the nation's first network of housing counseling organizations dedicated to serving Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) facing foreclosures or who need general housing counseling. The National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development (CAPACD), is now an intermediary for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and will support a national network of nonprofit community based organizations in ten states providing services in more than ten AAPI languages and communities. more»December 1, 2009
MUTLI-LINGUAL EDUCATIONAL RESOURCE FAIR FOR HOMEOWNERS IN SAN GABRIEL VALLEY
Los Angeles, CA - The foreclosure crisis has resulted in the advent of a new genre of foreclosure rescue scams targeting the Asian American and Pacific Islander and other vulnerable communities. Borrowers have reported paying anywhere from $500-$7000 to foreclosure modification scammers that collect fees up front and provide no assistance to the borrower. Meanwhile, homeowners risk losing additional savings and continue to face the threat of foreclosure. The immigrant population within the AAPI community has been especially hard hit because information on how to prevent foreclosure and accessing government programs are often not readily accessible in the primary languages spoken by many within the AAPI community. more»December 3, 2009
