| Introduction |
The New Face of Asian Pacific America:
Numbers, Diversity and Change in the 21st Century is the most
comprehensive, up-to-date analysis of the significant demographic
and cultural changes of Asian Pacific America. Through informative
essays and over 100 photos, charts, and graphics, this book
provides the first analysis of recently released census socioeconomic
data on the rapidly growing and diverse Asian Pacific American
population and the first demographic analysis of the fast-growing
mixed race/ethnicity population in the Asian-American community.
The book is written by leading Asian-American scholars, journalists,
and community leaders from across the nation.
The co-editors of the book are Eric Lai of Asianweek
and Dennis Arguelles of the UCLA Asian American Studies Center.
It is co-published by AsianWeek newspaper of San Francisco and
UCLA's Asian American Studies Center, with partner organizations,
the Organization for Chinese Americans and the National Coalition
for Asian Pacific American Community Development. The project
received a major grant from State Farm Insurance Company.
It is also a publication of the newly-established Asian Pacific
American Community Development Data Center, a collaborative
census information project of the UCLA Asian American Studies
Center and the National Coalition for Asian Pacific American
Community Development.

OCA ANNOUNCES RELEASE OF NEW BOOK ON "THE NEW FACE OF ASIAN PACIFIC
AMERICA"
Washington, DC - The Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA),
a national Asian Pacific American (APA) civil rights advocacy and
educational organization with over 80 chapters and affiliates nationwide,
is pleased to announce the release of a new book, The New Face
of Asian Pacific America: Numbers, Diversity and Change in the 21st
Century, the most comprehensive, up-to-date analysis of demographic
and cultural changes in the Asian Pacific American community. "OCA
is very excited to be a part of this project," states Raymond Wong,
OCA National President. "With the help of our 50 chapters, we will
be donating copies of the book to local libraries and schools across
the nation."
The New Face of Asian Pacific America is written by leading
Asian American scholars and journalists. The co-editors of the book
are Eric Lai of AsianWeek and Dennis Arguelles of the UCLA
Asian American Studies Center. The book is co-published by AsianWeek
newspaper and UCLA's Asian American Studies Center, with
partner organizations, OCA and the National Coalition
for Asian Pacific American Community Development (NCAPCD).
The book draws upon data from the U.S. Census 2000 and other quantitative
surveys. The book is also the first publication to precisely calculate
the actual combined APA population in 2000, without excluding mixed-race
APAs. The book is divided into sections by ethnicity as well as
geography, and provides many tables, maps and charts of demographic
data of APAs.
"The data provided in this book provides a roadmap for OCA to advocate
effectively to meet the needs of our communities," states Christine
Chen, OCA Executive Director. "We need this information to educate
our policy makers, funders, and many others from the private and
public sector about Asian Pacific Americans."
OCA currently serves as a Census Information Center, in cooperation
with the U.S. Census Bureau, and serves as a repository for census
data and reports.

"The New Face of Asian Pacific America is a comprehensive overview
of APAs following an era of dramatic population growth and change
in communities nationwide. This is an essential reference for policymakers,
politicians, and sociologists. In understanding our progress, we
can more adequately prepare for the future."
-U.S. Representative Mike Honda (D-San Jose )
"Any and all data on the APA community that comes in an easy and
usable format such The New Face is critical for helping to dispel
the notion of the APA community as simply a monolithic 'model minority'.
It should help users-from policymakers to marketers-avoid leaving
out the needs of APAs. That is why this publication is needed."
-Daphne Kwok, Executive Director, Asian Pacific American
Institute for Congressional Studies
"This book is a terrific resource. Anybody who wishes to participate
in making good on our nation's great ideals and make its diverse
democracy work must begin with a solid foundation of knowledge about
our nation's many peoples. The New Face provides a picture of the
complexities of Asian and Pacific Islander immigrants and Asian
Pacific Americans. Highly recommended."
-Frank H. Wu, Professor of Law, Howard University, and Author,
