Given the current COVID-19 pandemic, National CAPACD has made the difficult but necessary decision to postpone our 20th Anniversary Convention. The new dates of the conference are September 14 - 16, 2020 in Seattle, WA at the Westin Hotel Seattle. Although our originally planned dates are still three months away, and we are hopeful that the situation nationwide will improve by then, we believe it is necessary to postpone the conference to support healthy and safe communities.
Please keep in mind that while we are working closely with our vendors to reschedule the conference, it is still dependent upon the public health situation as it unfolds over the next few months – both nationally, as well as in our host city of Seattle.
National CAPACD will celebrate our 20th Anniversary at the Building CAPACD Convention in Seattle, WA. We will bring our members and partners together in the city where our founders first convened to reflect on all that we have accomplished collectively in the past two decades. And we will prepare ourselves for the work ahead to protect our communities, preserve #OurNeighborhoods, and reclaim our histories and the right to call this country home.
The Seattle metro area is home to more than half a million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders today and has been home for AAPIs since the late 1800s. Though 10 percent of AAPIs in the metro area live in poverty, their realities and needs are obscured by the success of AAPIs in the growing tech industry, as well as the major infrastructure investments and influx of workers in the region that have come to define the economic narrative of the city. In many ways, the region exemplifies the challenges faced across the country.
In this context, there is urgent need for focused dialogue and attention to the concerns of low income AAPI communities and the neighborhoods in which they live. The Building CAPACD Convention is one of the largest convenings of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander leaders and community practitioners in the country. We will bring together more than 300 AAPIs and other communities of color at the Convention, where we will highlight the work of organizations in the Pacific Northwest and connect it to innovative strategies being implemented across the country.
